Great Place to Work® Announces the 2021 World’s Best Workplaces™

19 October 2021 – Great Place to Work® and Fortune Magazine announced the 2021 World’s Best Workplaces™, a massive, data-led analysis of company culture around the globe. These 25 global leaders were selected from 10,000 companies, representing the voices of 19.8 million employees in 106 countries. This is the largest annual global survey of employee opinions ever.

The 25 World’s Best Workplaces stood out for creating globally exceptional employee experiences. These companies outperformed the competition with their unique and special benefits, robust training opportunities for professional development, and commitment to employee recognition and appreciation.

To be considered, companies must be identified as outstanding global employers by appearing on at least five Best Workplaces™ lists in Asia, Europe, Latin America, Africa, North America, or Australia.

“The World’s Best Workplaces are the most sweeping and consistent examples of inclusive company cultures we’ve ever known,” said Michael C. Bush, Global CEO of Great Place to Work.

“In a global workforce, alignment is everything, and these companies are fortifying their culture around the world — a nearly impossible feat. Even when tested by the pandemic, these companies recognize sub-communities in each region and their leaders carry an equitable employee experience across cultures. A huge congratulations to the World’s Best in 2021.”

Topping this year’s ranking of the World’s Best was transportation and logistics giant DHL Express, which secured 47 national list awards spanning five continents. Technology firm Cisco ranked second on the 2021 list with 22 national list awards, and hotelier Hilton placed third with 21 national list awards.

The World’s Best Workplaces range across industries, with information technology, professional services, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals making up nearly half of the winners.

New to the list this year is biotech firm Amgen and software company Atlassian. There are ten re-entries in the top 25 companies — workplaces that appeared on past lists but didn’t make it in 2020, including pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, which was last named to the list in 2015.

This year proved to be enormously competitive; compared to 2020’s results, employees scored their workplaces higher on all 60 survey statements in 2021 — a notable achievement after a year of workplace challenges amid the pandemic.

Compared to other workplaces, employees at the World’s Best are 17% more likely to say they have unique benefits. Employees at the World’s Best are also 16% percent are more likely to believe pay is fair and 14% more likely to say they have training and professional development opportunities.

Employees at the World’s Best are also more likely to be involved in company innovation, as calculated through Great Place to Work’s Innovation Velocity Ration (IVR). IVR describes an organization’s ability to quickly harness, mobilize and respond to new information and ideas. IVR is the ratio of employees working in conditions that enable innovation versus the number of employees who are not. At the World’s Best Workplaces, the IVR is 7.2, meaning for every seven employees able to innovate, only two are experiencing friction. At other organizations, that drops to 5.2.

Globally, over 90% of employees at the World’s Best say they have a sense of pride in their work, that management is honest and ethical, and that they feel good about the ways the company contributes to the local community.

Slight regional variations could be seen, highlighting differences in company culture around the world. In Asia, the Best Workplaces demonstrated an outstanding commitment to honesty and transparency from management, as well as warm, welcoming work environments. Latin America’s Best Workplaces scored high on opportunities for professional development and trust in leadership. And in the U.S., employees at Best Workplaces versus other organizations were 15.6 times more likely to say their company was a great place to work when it showed a commitment to social responsibility during the pandemic.

Great Place to Work® Middle East Celebrates the 2021 Best Workplaces for Women in the GCC™ List

Great Place to Work® Middle East surveyed thousands of female employees from across the region to determine the 2021 Best Workplaces for Women™.

This recognition is based on confidential survey data assessing female employee experiences of trust, innovation, company values, and leadership. The analysis considers responses of female employees across the Gulf region on key factors that create great workplaces For All™.

Powering an Inclusive Future for All Women in the GCC

Great Place to Work assesses the holistic experience of women in the workplace to determine the organizations that provide inclusive environments where gender parity is paramount, and that support equitable access to opportunities regardless of gender.

Through our analysis of women employees’ feedback across all industries throughout the region, we are witnessing unwavering support from leaders to ensure employees are heard and cared for and we showcase their efforts on our Best Workplaces™ Lists.

A recent study by Great Place to Work® Middle East, covering the GCC region, showed that 28% of females hold leadership positions. The number is expected to increase over the upcoming years with women leaders advancing in their careers as equal opportunities result in talent optimization.

Fair treatment across all levels of the organization is currently an ongoing concern for both females and males that organizations are constantly seeking to resolve. Notably, female individual contributors and executives are less likely to say they receive fair treatment regardless of gender than their male counterparts.

To overcome this, particularly for women, organizations are trying to get a better understanding of how women are feeling at all levels in their organization by:

  • Listening to women by incentivizing employee growth
  • Being accessible
  • Overcoming gender gaps by establishing clear expectations.

Topping the lists for this year by prioritizing inclusivity and equal opportunities for women across all levels in the organization are DHL Express, The ONE, and Century Financial in the large, medium, and small size categories, respectively.

How Great Place to Work® determines the Best Workplaces for Women in the GCC™

Great Place to Work® Middle East identifies the Best Workplaces in for Women™ by surveying employees across the region about the key factors that create great workplaces For All™.

Companies this year rank in three size categories: Small, Medium, and Large. Multinational organizations are also assessed on their efforts to create great workplaces across multiple countries in the region.

Great Place to Work® Announces the 2021 Best Workplaces in Asia™ Based on +3.3 Million Employee Experiences

Great Place to Work®, the global authority on workplace culture, surveyed over 3.3 million employees from across 16 diverse countries and cultures in Asia and the Middle East to determine the 2021 Best Workplaces in Asia™. This is the largest survey of employee experiences in Asia.

To be named as best in Asia, these 200 companies were the highest-ranked on Great Place to Work® Best Workplaces™ National lists across the region. This recognition is based on confidential survey data assessing employee experiences of trust, innovation, company values, and leadership. Companies are also evaluated on how well they are creating a For All™ workplace experience, inclusive of all employees no matter who they are or what they do.

On average, companies ranked on the Best Workplaces in Asia™ scored 10% better than those that made it to the National list level — an incredibly high bar as such workplaces are the best of the best in their own country. The Best Workplaces in Asia™ also had 15% more employees report:

  • Feeling that management involves people in its decision-making
  • Receiving special and unique benefits
  • Receiving a fair share of the profits made by the organization

For companies on National lists across Asia, 70% of employees said they experience well-being at work (defined by factors such as feeling cared for and believing their workplace is a psychologically and emotionally healthy place to work). But that number jumps even higher to 81% at the Best Workplaces in Asia™.

“The Best Workplaces in Asia™ set the bar for company culture by supporting employee well-being and building inclusive workplaces that are good for everyone,” said Michael C. Bush, Global CEO of Great Place to Work®. “They demonstrate how much they value their most important resource – their people. Thanks to these companies, more than 3.3 million employees benefit from the highest working conditions in a range of industries across Asia.”

Highlights from the 2021 Best Workplaces in Asia™

Topping the list for the second year in a row in the multinational category are shipping company DHL Express and hotelier Hilton – both holding onto their 2020 first and second-place rankings, respectively.

In the large category, PAP Community Foundation (Singapore), Talawakelle Tea Estates (Sri Lanka), and KB Kookmin Card (South Korea) claimed the top three spots.

Canva (Philippines) topped the list in the small-medium business (SMB) category, followed by Charity Committee for Orphans Care (ENSAN) (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) and THE One (United Arab Emirates).

Several new entries made the list this year, including luxury retailer Chalhoub Group, telecom company Ericsson, medical device supplier Medtronic, and financial services brands American Express and Synchrony. All of these brands made it into the top 15 multinational workplaces in Asia.

This year, COVID-19 brought physical and mental well-being front of mind for both employers and employees. In China, Hilton provided a live-stream lecture on return-to-work safety with the chief doctor of the Shanghai Centre for Disease Control and the director of infectious diseases at Huashan Hospital.

In India, Medtronic introduced a vaccination program for employees and their families. Lighting company Signify has in-house doctors available 2-3 days per week. In the Philippines, Canva is offering free COVID vaccinations for all employees and their household families.

In the United Arab Emirates and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, maintaining employee welfare was their goal as THE One and The Chalhoub Group prioritized constant internal communication and transparency. From free sessions with clinical psychologists & life coaches at The Chalhoub Group through to daily group counseling at THE One, the organizations not only succeeded in accommodating their employees in terms of safety but also managed to watch their organization prosper during these turbulent times. Charity Committee for Orphans Care (ENSAN) in Kingdom Saudi Arabia raised their competitive spirit this year by providing employees with competitions employees can participate in with the rest of their families which helped alleviate the stresses of COVID and provided employees with the needed security to accomplish their tasks.

Great Place to Work® Middle East Reveals the 2021 Best Workplaces in the United Arab Emirates™

1 April 2021 – Great Place to Work® Middle East recognized the top 45 companies with outstanding workplace cultures in the United Arab Emirates. Organizations that have made it to the list this year have had to work towards achieving two main goals: to preserve business continuity and maintain employee wellbeing. While both resulted in different outcomes, the goals were tackled in a similar way. For example, businesses were monitored just as well as employees were monitored, and businesses were invested in just as much -if not more- as employees in that same organization were invested in. Ultimately, protecting businesses also meant protecting employees, and protecting employees was not an easy task during a pandemic. These great workplaces, however, boldly stood by their employees and provided them with the needed mental, physical and financial support.

Leaders got creative in the ways with which they connect with their employees, thus continuously building upon a solid foundation of trust. With constant communication across all levels of the organization, employees felt listened to and cared for. Employees even began to form a stronger bond not only with their colleagues but across all levels of the organization as well. Organizations this year also built upon a sense of belonging. When everything seemed to be at risk, employees were made to feel comfortable with their choices. The stability that was granted to them throughout the pandemic provided them with the chance to get inspired and grow mentally, as well as physically while seeking to uphold the success of their work-life/personal-life balance. To boost employee morale, organizations made sure to provide their staff with learning opportunities, as well as fun and engaging programs. A package that would not be complete without a simple thank-you note. Continuous appreciation and recognition to employees when they least expect offers them the needed confidence to express themselves as best they could and showcase the best of their attributes. This year’s best have utilized what they do best and not only did they reflect that internally within their organization, but they extended it out to the community as well under the notion, ‘we are in this together.’

Climbing from fourth place in the previous year to securing this year’s top rank was THE One. The made-in-the-UAE retail company has been featured in every UAE Best Workplaces™ list since it was first launched in 2011. THE One maintains this position due to the commitment of their leadership to deliver the best experiences to their employees. Year after year they make sure to raise the bar by adopting the best practices in the market and this year was no different. Amongst the ongoing struggles of the pandemic, they stood by their people and are continuously overcoming one of the most turbulent periods the region has ever come across.

The logistics company, DHL, ranked second this year has not stopped putting people first for ten years straight, having consistently been positioned in the top five on the Best Workplaces™ list.  DHL’s agility allowed their leadership to easily adapt to new business situations which provided employees with a family experience that instilled in them the will to go the extra mile to watch their organization prosper.

Ranked third for this year is Chalhoub Group, the leading partner for luxury across the Middle East. Chalhoub Group was adamant about providing a great workplace culture for their employees and are amongst the companies that are frontrunners in moving to remote work and providing constant internal communication and transparency. From celebrations to recognition programs, to launching regular surveys for valuable employee feedback, Chalhoub group went the extra mile to showcase employee talents and unique attributes.

Runner-up on this year’s Best Workplaces list was Five Hotels, which moved up to 18 spots from last year, followed by Hilton, which moved down two spots to take fifth place.

Ranking from 6th to 10th place on the list were Dubai Police, Century Financial, Splash, Dubai Police Academy and Aldar Properties, respectively. Rounding out the final 35 positions on the list were Cisco, Sara Group, Bacardi, Leminar Group, General Mills, Yum! Brands, Babyshop, MSD Pharmaceuticals, International Beverage & Filling Industries LLC, Homebox, Pizza Express, AbbVie Biopharmaceuticals GmbH, Emax, Max, Glander International Bunkering, Shoexpress, Shoemart, Apparel Group, Westford University College, Al Dabbagh Group, Homecentre, SAS UAE, Global Food Industries LLC, LGT (Middle East) Ltd., Lifestyle, Centrepoint, Amgen, Zee Entertainment Middle East FZ LLC., Grohe, Shoemart International, Shift Electronics, Teleperformance UAE, Government of Sharjah – Department of eGovernment, Servier, Saudi German Hospitals

Commenting on this year’s Best Workplaces™ list, Ibrahim Mougharbel, Managing Director for the UAE, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, Great Place to Work® Middle East, said: “Despite the challenges we are currently facing, we are proud to witness continuous growth in employee culture awareness among leaders in the UAE and the Middle East in general. Our Best Workplaces™ for this year have persevered through this time of unprecedented upheaval and we are here to celebrate them.”

Great Place to Work® Middle East conducts a rigorous audit of every participating company before it can be listed as one of the Best Workplaces™ in the region. This year, the Best Workplaces™ spanned across multiple industries that include retail, social services and government agencies, transportation, finance, and media. The organizations were surveyed on fundamental issues that take into account how trustworthy and caring an organization is for its employees during times of crisis.

To obtain the Best Workplace™ ranking, the companies are scored. Sixty percent of a company’s score is based on the confidential feedback of their employees while the remaining score is attained from an audit of management and HR practices- a reflection of the company’s solutions to specific criteria. This year, the audit was strictly built around the bold acts of leadership the organizations have undertaken in response to the COVID-19 crisis, and the ways the pandemic has impacted their people, business, and the community.

Within this framework, employees were asked about their physical, emotional, and financial health which mirrored some of the tough choices leaders had chosen to take during this unsettling period of time. Having said that, the companies that are continuously building a greater environment for their employees have stood out, and we are always here to celebrate them.

On the 25th of March 2021, Great Place to Work® Middle East recognized the top 30 companies with outstanding workplace cultures in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

This year brought about many challenges across all industries around the world. In all instances, organizations had to struggle to meet the demands of the ongoing pandemic to maintain business productivity.

Our Best Workplaces™ list for this year celebrates organizations that have gone above and beyond in ensuring their employees are their top priority. Securing the number one spot for this year is Cisco,  moving up a rank from the previous year.

Cisco was able to utilize what they are good at to support not only their employees but their community at large and there is no doubt this organization ceased this time as an opportunity to allow their technology to grow to benefit their people. Within that framework, communication platforms at Cisco guaranteed employees’ voices were heard and technological advancement at the organization also ensured the safety and wellbeing of frontline workers.

A leading partner for luxury across the Middle East, Chalhoub Group, ranked second on our Best WorkplacesTM list for this year. The organization asserted workplace culture as they maintained constant internal communication and transparency. The organization launched regular surveys for valuable employee feedback and recognized employees for their efforts. They did not go easy on their employees as they continuously supported their people while providing them with the means to grow and develop; there is no doubt that Chalhoub Group went the extra mile to showcase employee talents and unique attributes.

Ranked third for this year is Dar Al Riyadh, an organization that went by the words: people before profit. It was made clear Dar Al Riyadh took every little detail into consideration before setting action plans, which instilled in their employees a sense of belonging. When it came to health and safety, their efforts were no different as action plans were meticulously carried out with one goal in mind: to always put people first.

An organization designed for resilience, not only efficiency: Al Dabbagh Group (in fourth place) provided constant care across all levels of the organization to provide employees with the security and stability they required during this turbulent time. Employees were granted all requirements they needed to work from home and were recognized and appreciated for their efforts in tackling the pandemic.

In fifth place, Hilton-a leading global hospitality company, made sure to empower their people by offering training and development programs as well as wellness initiatives. Continuously abiding by these motives, it is of no surprise that Hilton was able to bring out the best in their people.

Ranking from 6th to 10th place on the list were The Dow Company, Landmark Arabia, DHL Express, Charity Committee for Orphans Care (ENSAN), and Sara Group, respectively.

Rounding out the final 20 positions on the list were Amgen, AutoWorld, Tawal, Alkhabeer Capital, United Cooperative Assurance, Saudi Contractors Authority, AbbVie Biopharmaceuticals GmbH, Aqalat, MSD Pharmaceuticals, Servier, SEDCO Holding, Basamh Group, Communication and Information Technology Commission, Capital Market Authority, Mayar, Maersk, Al majed oud, Apparel Group, Saudi Industrial Development Fund, Sudair Pharmaceuticals.

Commenting on this year’s Best Workplaces™ list, Tanzeel Rehman, Managing Director for the KSA and Bahrain, Great Place to Work® Middle East, said: “Our goal is to evolve the work culture in the Kingdom by empowering employees and accelerating performance for them to be able to reach their full potential. There is no doubt that the Kingdom is working towards becoming the world’s happiest nation as we proudly celebrate these great workplaces today. This year has been-and it seems will continue to be tough, but every leader on our Best Workplaces™ list for this year has gone above and beyond for their people. Congratulations to all the organizations that made it to our Best Workplaces™ list for this year! We are proud of you!”

To obtain a Best Workplace™ ranking, the companies are scored.

Having said that, the organizations that are continuously building a greater environment for their employees have stood out, and we are always here to celebrate them.

Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on the confidential feedback of their employees while the remaining score is attained from an audit of management and HR practices.

“Employees told us how they felt about 60 different aspects of their workplace culture, including credibility, respect, pride, and camaraderie. Among these, measurements of fairness and equity revealed the biggest gaps between women’s and men’s workplace experience. Women, more often than men, experience management playing favorites and handing out promotions and work projects unfairly,” said Mazen Harb, Managing Director, Great Place To Work® Middle East.

The Best Workplaces for Women in the GCC™ are represented by a diverse number of governmental entities and industries including logistics, technology, finance, media, retail, fashion, FMCG, hospitality, healthcare, and manufacturing.
